In early 2021, ORD announced an opportunity for VA medical facilities with current ORD-funded research programs to request supplementary funds to promote diversity in their workforce. These funds are in support of a mentored research experience for qualified clinician and non-clinician scientists in the postdoctoral phase of their career. The mentored DEI Research Supplement is intended to provide support for an early career candidate as they develop a proposal for a VA Career Development Award Letter of Intent (LOI) and application. Eleven mentored DEI supplements were awarded in 2021 and ten were awarded in FY 2022.
In the summer of 2022, ORD also announced the ORD Research Supplements to Promote Collaborations to Enhance Diversity in VA Research” funding opportunity to engage and recruit researchers from underrepresented groups by leveraging existing ORD-funded research while establishing strong collaborative partnerships between VA Merit Award investigators and investigators at non-VA institutions, including, but not limited to Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs).
