Dr. Gil Alterovitz
Dr. Gil Alterovitz, director of the VA National Artificial Intelligence Institute (NAII), was awarded the 2023 Disruptive Tech Change Agent Award. Alterovitz is recognized among an outstanding group of individuals who push the envelope and use technologies in new and disruptive ways.
Alterovitz’s work has brought together more than 20 offices from across VA to create the agency’s first Artificial Intelligence (AI) Strategy, which has helped guide the agency in conducting research in a strategic and ethical manner. Under Alterovitz’s leadership, NAII is working together with the VA Secretary’s Center for Strategic Partnerships to build AI research and development capacity to improve care and services provided to Veterans, as well as their families and caregivers. Alterovitz also provides subject matter expertise in AI for both national and international policy makers.
Throughout his career, Alterovitz has led national and international collaborative initiatives to develop novel informatics methods and approaches for integrating clinical, pharmaceutical, and genomic information―from research to point of care. His contributions to national AI policy include working with the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy and serving as a co-author of The National AI Research and Development Strategic Plan, among others.
Alterovitz is a member of the faculty at Harvard Medical School. He is also a best-selling author and has produced more than 80 peer-reviewed publications and three books in his research field. He has received international Fulbright awards in Canada and the United Kingdom. Alterovitz’s work has gained international recognition through his collaborations with government, industry, and academia to bring together leading minds in AI to develop solutions for Veterans and the American people.
The Disruptive Tech Change Agent Award honors outstanding IT and consulting leaders, from both private industry and government, who are working every day to take calculated risks and positively disrupt the federal tech market. The 2023 award will be presented on April 12, 2023, at the Hyatt Regency Tysons Corner Center in McLean, Virginia.
