Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is an adult onset, rapidly fatal, neurodegenerative disease of unknown etiology. Studies have indicated a higher prevalence of ALS among veterans than among civilians, and in 2008, ALS was declared a fully compensable condition by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).
