Eileen G. Collins, Ph.D., R.N., Honored for Nursing Research

Eileen G. Collins, Ph.D., R.N.

Eileen G. Collins, Ph.D., R.N., received the Thomas L. Petty Distinguished Pulmonary Scholar Award from the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVPR) at the group's annual meeting in September 2014. Collins directs the Physical Performance Laboratory at the Edward Hines Jr. VA Hospital in Hines, Ill. She is also a professor in the College of Nursing at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Her research focuses on improving the quality of life of patients with chronic illnesses through physical activity, using innovative approaches such as computerized biofeedback for extending exercise endurance. She has tested the use of walking poles to improve mobility and exercise endurance in patients with peripheral arterial disease, and has studied energy expenditures among people with spinal cord injury in order to determine appropriate exercise recommendations for that population.

Most recently, Collins was lead author on the Clinical Competency Guidelines for Pulmonary Rehabilitation Professionals, a position statement of the AACVPR, published in the September-October 2014 issue of the Journal of Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation and Prevention.

Her work has been funded by VA—through both Rehabilitation R&D and Health Services R&D—and by the National Institute of Nursing Research and the American Nurses Foundation, among other organizations.
