Informatics leader elected as fellow

thumbnail Thomas K. Houston, MD, MPH, director of the VA's eHealth Quality Enhancement Research Initiative (QUERI), was elected as a fellow to the American College of Medical Informatics. Houston's research focuses on health informatics, patient-provider communication, and behavioral science. His eHealth QUERI group works to boost Veterans' access to—and use of—technology that lets them play a greater role in their care. In other work, he recently helped conduct a study on Internet-based smoking cessation programs. He also led innovative studies on using culturally tailored DVDs, featuring storytelling by patients' peers, to help curb smoking and hypertension among African Americans. Houston is also a primary care physician at the Bedford (Mass.) VA Medical Center and a professor at the University of Massachusetts Medical School.
