Dr. Leslie R.M. Hausmann, a Center for Health Equity Research and Promotion (CHERP) investigator at the VA Pittsburgh Health Care System and assistant professor of medicine at the University of Pittsburgh, was one of three 2014 recipients of the Secretary's Diversity and Inclusion Excellence Awards.
Hausmann was recognized for helping to increase diversity in the health sciences through her mentoring work. She was also recognized for promoting civility, respect, engagement, and inclusion in the workplace; improving cultural competency through training opportunities; and improving the quality and equity of blood pressure control among Veterans with hypertension.
She has partnered with the VHA Office of Health Equity to develop and pilot test a novel cultural competency program to educate VA patient-aligned care teams (PACTs) about unconscious bias, and ways to prevent that bias from negatively affecting patient care. She also led a national study of VA outpatients focused on racial and ethnic differences in their experiences with VA care.
