Hypertension is a common but a frequently overlooked and underreported adverse effect of erythropoietin (EPO) therapy. Although EPO was approved in 1989 for treatment of anemia in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), only recently have trials noted substantial cardiovascular risks associated with normalization of hemoglobin.
